Energy cost freaks out most of us whenever our monthly billing statement arrives. It is important nowadays to find ways how to minimize our energy usage to control this expense which takes a big toll in our household budget.

Here are a few guidelines, which can help save energy and reduce your utility bill.

Turn Off Unused Appliances

In all houses, there are few rooms that are not used, it is important that you close those rooms permanently, just shutting the door will not help as ventilators also need to be closed properly. You can buy ventilator covers from the market, which are plastic made bags, and cover the vents in a way that air cannot cross even through any leakages. Once the vents are covered, tightly close the doors of such rooms as well, in this way you will reduce total area that needs heating. Remember the smaller the area, less energy will be used to heat it up. So try to make your place a bit smaller by locking the unused block.

Check Windows

Check the windows every now and then and make sure all windows are tightly closed with no leakage. Most of us may do not pay much attention to this small detail but it helps a lot in saving the heat within your house and cutting down on your utility bills. Make sure that the windows are tightly closed and do not allow any ventilation to seep out or through it.

Use Timers and Thermostats

50% of the utility bills usually go into heating purposes. You cannot live in a cold home; however, heating it continuously is not really required, especially when nobody is at home. During the day time, you can adjust the thermostat to the minimal. This will help reduce your heating cost. You can even set the timer so that the heating device is turned off when nobody is using the place and it will automatically turn on at the specific time so that when you return, the house is warm and cozy. In this way, you can easily reduce your usage by 3 to 4 hours daily.

Energy Audit

If you feel that your energy bills are abnormally high, this may be a time to have an energy audit done by professional and experts. The auditors will visit your place, identify the problem and propose remedies. On many occasions where your utility bills are very high, an energy audit can reduce your utility bill by up to 50%. All you need to do is follow their recommendations.

Remember that energy is a costly thing and its prices are not expected to reduce soon. The only way you can control your bill is by taking necessary steps to reduce it. Even the small things can help you save on your energy costs.

Great tips for saving. I have also installing motion activated switches in our bathrooms and kitchen, the two areas where I often find the lights have been left on. Now they come on when you walk -in and stay on for as long as you'd like. You can set the timer to the desired time.
